We hope to receive poetry that creates and subsequently satisfies new appetites in us. Indicating a preference might imply that we aren’t open to the new–the unexpected. The first time someone described sushi to us, it sounded insane. We love sushi now. We can’t get enough of it. The same with prose poems. Send us something we’ve never tried before, but are bound to adore. We accept 3-5 poems per submission, or 10 pages total.
We enjoy all types of fiction, but especially those pieces that pull us into the story and make us pay attention. As writers and readers, we appreciate the sharply defined detail, a particularly vivid character, a clever voice, or the artful use of language--but we're most interested in stories that use these techniques in service to the narrative, not as a substitute for the story itself. We do accept flash-fiction, but just like any other piece, it should tell a story. Generally, we publish stories of 5,000 words or less; please inquire first before sending longer pieces.
We appreciate what is eclectic. We want to read essay, lyric essay, literary nonfiction, and memoir. More than anything, we look for nonfiction work that expresses its insights in strong and vivid language. Nonfiction defines itself by what it is not. We also look for nonfiction which experiments with the boundaries of the genre. Due to space limitations, we prefer work that is under 7,500 words. Excerpts of longer works are acceptable as long as they are self-contained.
